Pre-Marital & Pre-Commitment Counseling- Atlanta, New York, and Maine

How do we make sure that we are ready for marriage?

Whether you are already engaged or contemplating it, you may have doubts and fears about getting married. Is this “your person”? Are you truly compatible? Do you have the skills to navigate all the complexities of married life? Maybe you feel pretty good about committing to your partner but, you want to be as prepared as possible. Pre-marital or pre-commitment counseling can increase your readiness, skills, and awareness.

Premarital Counseling Can Help

The good news is that we are wired for connection. Humans are born with the innate capacity to bond and love throughout our lives. Marriage will bring its challenges. Yet when couples understand themselves, their relationship, and learn how to relate and connect skillfully, they are better able to navigate tough times. Premarital counseling helps couples deepen intimacy and build communication skills that serve as tremendous buffers to adversity and creates more peace and joy.

Many couples come to premarital therapy not only wanting to prepare for future adversity but because they are already struggling with relationship difficulties. Unhelpful relational patterns and dynamics can be caused by family of origin, past trauma and attachment wounds . But those unhelpful patterns can be changed so that partners can relate, trust, and love more freely. My experience and expertise in trauma and attachment permits me to address these issues as they arise.

How I Approach Premarital Counseling

In my pre-commitment work with couples, I teach them how to create a great relationship based on each partner’s unique personality and attachment style. I utilize a combination of Prepare-Enrich (the #1 Pre-marital assessment tool) and the Gold Standard Couple’s Therapy, Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) to increase understanding and deepen intimacy.

The Prepare-Enrich Assessment tool identifies dynamics, personality, stress and strength and growth areas. We use the assessment results as a guide to increase understanding of each partner and of the relationship.

The EFT framework deepens our understanding of the assessment results particularly in regard to relationship dynamics and attachment styles. And using EFT, we can build on relationships strengths and rework unhelpful cycles and ways of communicating. After our work, couples usually feel closer, have more understanding and trust, and increased capacity to handle “the slings and arrows” of life.
