Why are relationships so hard?

Whether we like it or not, we humans are wired for connection. And while each of us may tilt towards either end of the introversion/extroversion spectrum, relationships impact everyone’s health and happiness. Yet, we are rarely taught (nor are we witness to) healthy ways of relating to others. We aren’t shown how to relate well to ourselves either. It is no wonder that relationships can be challenging.

We seem normal only to those who don’t know us very well. In a wiser, more self-aware society than our own, a standard question on any early dinner date would be: “And how are you crazy?” - Alain de Botton

Individual Therapy Can Help

One thing I have observed as an individual and a couple’s therapist (and in my personal relationships) is that one’s relationship with one’s self, and all the accompanying beliefs and judgements, will show up in relationships to others. If you are struggling with patterns and dynamics in relationships that no longer serve you, therapy can help you shift them and find a way forward. Reactivity in relationships is especially common…and destructive. Whether you find yourself getting angry, anxious, or shut down in interactions with your partner, family or friends, Brainspotting and EMDR can be very helpful approaches to reducing reactivity and the things that seem to trigger or set you off.

Couple’s Counseling Can Help

In relationships, it is not just what is happening inside each partner. It is not one person in a relationship who is the “problem”. It is what is happening between individuals that is the issue. Couple’s often find themselves trapped in the same unhelpful cycles of arguing, stonewalling, and hurting. But there is a way to change and create something new between partners in relationships. Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) has 30 years of research demonstrating its effectiveness in creating lasting change in relationships.
